The Animals & Environmental Workshop

The Animals, Environmental and Public Policy Workshop was established from the Biology Workshop in 2006 in an attempt to provide students an opportunity to use scientific and public policy research to solve current issues.

Goals of the workshop:

  • To conduct scientific research that makes an impact on our local and global community.
  • To understand the impacts of scientific research on public policy.
  • To make a difference in the lives of non-human animals and the environment.

The workshop consists of four parts:

Research:

  • Research on Public Policy
    • Cheetahs: Characteristics & Extinction
    •

    • HIV/AIDS: The Impact of Music on HIV/AIDS Education

  • Scientific Research
    • Water Study: The Impacts of Anti-Fouling Boat Paint

    • Nutrition Study: Profile of Student Eating Habits
    •

    • Pet Population: Profile of the Shenandoah Valley Spay & Neuter Clinic

    • Forensics Science

Each student gets to pick their own research topic and must first complete a research proposal and literature review, if scientific research.

Scientific Field Trips:

Students take field trips throughout the year. Examples of field trips include Briarwood Marine Center, The Science Museum, & Marine Science Conference.

Agricultural Tour & Studies of Current Public Policy:

Students visit a variety of farms that represent the diversity of American farming, comparing the methods of crop production, animal welfare, and management styles. Farms visited include Holly Hill Farm, Sauchuk Farm, Weir River Farm, Overlook Farm, Maple Farm Sanctuary, & Hawthorne Valley Farms.

Envirothon:

We compete in regional environmental competition against schools from throughout MA and attend 4 conferences before the competition. We compete at Ecostations on four main areas of knowledge: aquatics, wildlife, soils, trees. We also present on a current issue topic.
